Paul Farhi's "Speak No Evil" piece (Winter 2011) reminded me of an oft-repeated
line by the late Edwin R. Bayley, the political reporter for the Milwaukee Journal
who went on to become the founding dean of the graduate school of journalism at
the University of California, Berkeley:
"Whenever newspapers talk about themselves, they lie."
